There are a few types of people that you should never regard as your friends. It does not mean that they are bad. It does not mean you should avoid them either. But calling people from the list below your friend would be a mistake.
Egomaniacs
These people do not care how you feel and what matters to you. They might listen to your concerns for a few minutes. However, they will soon change the topic and start talking about themselves. They will do all possible to switch your attention from your issues to their problems. Egomaniacs do not believe that there are people who would be more important than they. You will never get any support or understanding from them.
Too little empathy – sympathy only
You cannot blame people for being indifferent to what you say to them or complain about. To most of those you meet your problems will always seem to be meaningless and not so serious. Instead of empathy you will receive a lot of sympathy. And those are two absolutely different emotions. Friends who offer you to join their weekend party during your saddest moments express their sympathy. This is not what you need when you are depressed or unhappy. You need a friend who has empathy for you. This means that the person your share your sorrow with offers a solution and gives you advice. They will try to participate in your life and make it easier and more comfortable by finding a way out. They will not try to calm you down or distract you from the issue.
